Sustainability & Welfare | 17 november
Sustainability is all encompassing. It includes care for the environment, the birds, animal welfare, food safety and security and also for the all-important economics. However, not every element works together without a hitch. Improving sustainability in poultry production means not only reducing costs and maximizing productivity but also a focus on bird health and welfare and other societal concerns. Getting the balance right is key, ensuring a positive outcome for both birds, planet and profit. Learn more during our event at Eurotier.

Antibiotic Reduction | 17 november
The reduction of antibiotic usage, is first and foremost a human health issue. Preventing bacteria from becoming resistant is essential to ensure that these key medicines stay available to save lives. As the livestock sector is seen as a reservoir of resistant bacteria, caused by antibiotic usage, there is both legislative and societal pressure on the sector to improve its ‘act’ . Producing chicken with less or no antibiotics is the target, at the same time it is essential to keep the birds healthy.

Feed Efficiency | 15 november
All About Feed will host a seminar on Feed Efficiency at the upcoming EuroTier fair in Hanover. The seminar will take place on the 15th of November. The seminar will focus on the topic Feed Efficiency. The money spent on animal feed takes up the majority of the production costs on a farm. Therefore, it is important to get the most out of every kilogram of feed that is consumed by the animals, known as feed efficiency. This is not new, but even more relevant than ever.
As constantly changing dynamics in agriculture continues to challenge the animal protein supply. With tailor made feeding strategies, feed additives and focus on animal health it is possible to enter the next stage of feed efficiency. In this seminar experts from the feed industry will present you the latest insights and strategies on this topic.

The theme “Gut Health” has only grown in importance in recent years. Knowing what is happening inside the pigs’ gastro-intestinal tract has become a truly hot topic for the swine industry. Obviously that development was encouraged by the ban on using growth-promoting antibiotics in the EU, followed by the recent ban of pharmacological levels of zinc oxide. Banning the usage of these substances doesn’t mean that gut health problems have ceased to be a problem. More than ever, therefore, knowledge is needed how to better prepare and help the pigs get through weaning smoothly – and beyond. This seminar will address various lines of thought and present strategies.

What better show to address the theme of “Sustainability and Welfare” than EuroTier? For years, the show has been at the forefront to present the latest techniques and methods to improve animal welfare and to achieve higher levels of sustainability. Pig Progress celebrates the theme by addressing it in this side event. What farming methods could benefit both the animals and the environment? And are there different ways to think about animal nutrition?

Presentation title:
Virtual fencing for grazing management of dairy cattle
Virtual fencing technology supports flexible and dynamic grazing schemes tailored to the cows’ nutritional needs and the optimal pasture and cow management. KU Leuven has extensively tested commercial virtual fencing technology for different purposes in the past 3 years. In this study, we investigated the importance of a well-designed learning phase, evaluated the behaviour of the animals before and after introduction of the system, explored the possibility of using the GPS and accelerometer data for automatic behaviour classification, and tested the system in a flexible (e.g. exclusion zones) and dynamic context ( e.g. strip grazing).

The path to a responsible ‘antibiotic footprint’ in poultry production: Reduce, Replace, Rethink
Consumers are driving the demand for meat raised without routine use of antibiotics, with some major food chains adopting “antibiotic-free” policies for their meat supplies. How can we reduce antibiotic use and maintain performance with good ROI for the poultry producer?
Join us on our next seminar on the 17th of November where we will look at tools to push forward on the path of responsible antibiotic stewardship in the poultry farm in order to preserve the efficacy of existing antimicrobials which are a critical tool for both humans and animals.

Presentation title:
Gut health in conventional and slow-growing broiler breeds
The seminars on Gut Health will focus on keeping the birds gut healthy, which means that the animal can process the diet more efficiently, has a better immune system and is less susceptible to pathogenic bacteria and viruses. The veterinary, feed and management aspects of nurturing the birds from the time they hatch until they are well settled in the broiler house are put central. The seminars will provide you with the latest insights in knowledge of the inner workings of the gut and the effects of management- and nutritional interventions.
